On March 14 almost 120 Women’s Giving Circle members and friends gathered at Frida’s Field for this year’s International Women’s Day lunch.
It was a special day characterised by presence, generosity, and a shared commitment to empowering women and girls in our community.
As we gathered just days after Ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred had lashed our region, we were reminded of the power of like-minded locals coming together. As we saw in the aftermath of the 2022 floods, networks like Women’s Giving Circle play a vital role in strengthening our community, and our gathering was a testament to that collective strength.
Reflections from Our Panel
Our all-star panel was moderated by Giving Circle Coordinator, Amy Colli, and featured Mindy Woods, Tarla Lambert, Annabelle Hickson and Odette Barry who shared powerful reflections on the role we all play in shaping a more just and inclusive society.
The theme of collective action was echoed in Mindy’s words, as she generously invited us to deepen our connection to Country – that calling this place home comes with the responsibility to care for its waters and lands, as matriarchs and custodians.
Bringing a broader perspective, Tarla turned our attention to the global political landscape, reinforcing the urgency of keeping family violence on the agenda—even when other issues dominate the news cycle.
Odette spoke about the importance of raising compassionate, kind, and loving young men, breaking cycles of violence by holding space for them as they navigate the new world of masculinity without a rule book.
Rounding out the discussion, Annabelle reminded us of the importance of joy and light, to find uplifting stories, to invite people into the conversation; we can step beyond our own circles – progress is built through dialogue, not division.
The Power of Giving
A heartfelt thank you to Chris Edwards, our generous sponsors Sunglasses Fix, Bende, Sunranch, Muddy Clay Play, Balloon Aloft, The Brooklet, Spell and Brookies Gin, and of course all those who brought the fundraiser auction alive and helped us raise over $10,000 that will go directly towards grants supporting Cyclone Alfred recovery in the region.
Help Us Reach Our Goal
If you’re not already a member of the Women’s Giving Circle, we’d love you to join us!
Our goal is to reach 250 members this year, and we are currently at 159.
You can give $20 per week, or $1000 per year, and our collective generosity transforms the lives of women and children in the Northern Rivers.
Together, we are creating real, lasting impact.
