Indigenous Futures Foundation –  First Nation Food Security Project

The Indigenous Futures Foundation is dedicated to ending the food crisis in First Nation communities, within our lifetime. They partner with Aboriginal Medical Centres to ensure the effective distribution of meals every fortnight to Indigenous communities in the Northern Rivers. Meals are prepared in the FareShare Kitchen, with to 2000 frozen meals being distributed to various centres such as Bugalwena Medical Practice (Tweed Heads), Anglicare (Kingscliff, Chinderah), and Bulgarr Naru (Grafton). These locations have been chosen for their ability to reach Indigenous communities suffering from food insecurity, ensuring sensitive and considerate distribution.

Tackling the impactful concept of “strengthening mob using the power of food and education,” their NRCF 2023/24 Community Grant was put towards repairing and maintaining a vital food truck used to deliver to remote communities, fostering awareness about healthy eating habits and improving access to nutritious food.

The project has had a positive impact on the First Nation communities they serve. The social connections formed through our project have also had a positive impact on the mental well-being of recipients and volunteers. Many have expressed feeling less isolated and more connected to their communities. The project received a lot of interest and support from community members wanting to volunteer or contribute in other ways and they have since expanded their operations to include several more communities in Lismore, Casino, Ballina and Grafton.
