Flood to Flourish: Empowering the Tweed Valley to Lead Local Flood Resilience

NRCF AdminNews, Newsletter

The NRCF is proud to be the local delivery partner in Flood to Flourish, a national flood resilience initiative led by Monash University.

Flood to Flourish has received $1.4 million through the Federal Government’s Disaster Ready Fund to co-develop practical methods and tools that empower communities to take a leading role in flood risk management and long-term climate adaptation.

Why this matters

Floods are the most costly natural hazard in Australia, and with climate change increasing the frequency and severity of extreme weather, the need for stronger, community-led resilience has never been clearer.

The Northern Rivers is one of Australia’s most at-risk regions from climate change; including two of the top ten Federal electorates, and four of the most at-risk LGAs in NSW.

Our communities have struggled through the most expensive flooding disaster and recovery in Australian history. We have a unique lived experience that can contribute to a better community-informed flood resilience across Australia.

NRCF’s role

As the local delivery partner, NRCF will support community engagement, relationship building and place-based coordination in the Tweed Valley. Stage 1 of the project will focus on building trusted relationships, understanding local experiences of flooding, and co-developing tools and approaches that support community-led resilience.

To support this work, NRCF has appointed Zerina Millard as Flood to Flourish Community Connector for the Tweed Valley. Zerina brings experience in community engagement and disaster recovery, and will act as a bridge between the Monash research team and the local community, ensuring this work reflects local priorities and strengthens local capability.

How to get involved

Over the coming months, we will begin community conversations and engagement activities across the Tweed Valley.

If you are part of a community group, local organisation, Traditional Owner group, business or government agency interested in being involved, we would love to hear from you. Flood to Flourish is about strengthening our region’s capacity to not just recover from flood events, but to shape the systems, decisions and investments that influence long-term resilience.
