Vive les Volunteers – Luke Barker

Why did you decide to join NRCF?

I had spent several years in Bangalow in Primary School before moving away to South Australia. I had always loved the area and wanted to get back involved with the community when I returned. The NRCF has been a great way to give back to the community and region, and especially being able to work with a great group of like minded individuals who Volunteer, Donate and Support the NRCF.

What are you focusing on at the moment in your volunteer role?

My role with the NRCF is the Chair of the Investment Committee, ensuring the Investment Portfolio is managed within our Guidelines and is able to achieve sustainable growth of the Corpus and maintain grant distributions into the future.

More recently I have started the Tweed Shire Sub Fund to focus my fundraising efforts. The Tweed Shire Sub Fund is aimed at supporting health & wellbeing among children & youth in the Tweed Shire. The Ironman Fundraiser has been a great way to raise funds and my contributions will be specifically targeted towards the Tweed Shire Sub Fund.

Tell us something that people might not know about you.

My wife and I are expecting our first child, a baby girl, in September. Surprise! We also enjoy renovating houses in our spare time — Kylie might need to put the tools down and take a more supervisory role for a while though.

What do you enjoy about volunteering at NRCF?

The most rewarding part is seeing the benefit the community of Volunteers, Donors and Supporters of the NRCF make toward the lives of the Grant recipients in the Northern Rivers Region. It is also great knowing that as we invest in perpetuity, the benefits will continue for many years to come.
