Established in 2009, the Peter and Julie Bowen Southern Cross University ‘Bowen Education Fund’ supports disadvantaged students to study at Southern Cross University. By creating an NRCF named fund two special individuals now have this as their legacy.

Story written by Emma Bowden:

Having just completed my first year at Southern Cross University, I would like to express my sincere gratitude for the financial support I received as a beneficiary of the NRCF SCU Bowen Scholarship.

It allowed me to balance university education while committing to my AMEB music studies (classic vocal) as well as maintain various voluntary positions within the community. More importantly, it inspired me to “give back” and I derived great pleasure from mentoring, and subsequently vocally accompanying a visually impaired student for her HSC Music 1 studies and HSC practical examination.

I consider that by relieving some of the financial burden of tertiary education, the NRCF SCU Bowen scholarship has allowed me to enjoy my studies and pursue my passions. I wish to thank Peter Bowen and Southern Cross University for providing me with such valuable support.

Since receiving the SCU Bowen Scholarship, Emma went on to win the Gairbraid Scholarship in 2013.

The Gairbraid Scholarship is awarded to ‘the most meritorious school leaver in their first year of a course at Southern Cross University (Coffs Harbour campus), who, in their previous year gained their HSC from a public high school in the Coffs Harbour region’.

Thanks to the generosity of the SCU Bowen Education Fund and Emma’s hard work and determination, she was able to complete a Bachelor of Education (Primary).
